Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on the 28th of October, 1967 in the home of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer who was also the first Roberts who settled in Atlanta. The Robertses' father was interested in theatre from an early time. As a student at Emory University in 1952 he participated in plays on campus and elsewhere in Atlanta. He joined the Air Force. He was stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he appeared in an production along with Betty Lou Bredemus. In 1955, they got married and, in 1956, their child Eric Anthony was born. The couple divorced in 1957. the air force and Walter enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter started his work at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. The year 1964 was when Walter as well as Betty Lou began production on an on-sunday morning local children's TV show titled Bum Bum and His Buddies which they funded by themselves. The following year they started the Actors and Writers Workshop which ran for six years. They had Lelisa Billingsley (also known as Lisa) as well as Julia (also named Julie) in this time.
